Frequently Asked Questions

It’s important to us that we provide convenient, clear answers to all of your questions, before, during and after our visits with you. So please feel free to browse through the following frequently asked questions about our practice and procedures. And if there’s anything we’ve left out, just contact us by phone or email.

How do Dr. Scheideman, Dr. Runyon and Dr. Kostohryz keep up to date on all of the current techniques and materials?

Dr. Scheideman, Dr. Runyon and Dr. Kostohryz subscribe to the latest industry journals to keep tabs on research and development in the field of oral surgery, and take time on a regular basis to fulfill a high level of relevant, clinical continuing education and hands-on programs. Not only do they share this information with our entire staff, but each team member keeps up with their own areas of skill through continuing education as well.

What makes you different than any other oral surgery practice I might choose?

Dr. Scheideman, Dr. Runyon, and Dr. Kostohryz have completed a significant amount of highly demanding study, training, and examination beyond their initial degrees. Also, board certification, held by Dr. Scheideman and Dr. Kostohryz, provides a solid, specialized knowledge base from which they’ve built their long-standing practice.
Further, we’re set apart by an unusually high level of attention to detail both before, during and after your treatment. Before hand, we spend plenty of time listening, evaluating and planning your particular procedure. Then, we carefully instruct you as to what to expect, so that you’re entirely comfortable with all aspects of the surgery. A few days prior to your scheduled appointment, we’ll call you to ask for confirmation and to list your pre-op instructions once again.
On the day of your procedure, we attend to you as carefully as though you were a member of our own family: one of our staff is with you throughout every minute of your appointment, monitoring every aspect of your progress. Your parent, friend or family member is also welcome to stay with you from the time of your prep through to the insertion of the IV, then again after you’re awake.
After your surgery, we provide meticulous follow up: you’ll receive a personal phone call from your surgeon that same day, and we’ll be available to answer any of your further concerns or questions as you recover at home.

Do you accept my insurance plan?

We are not contracted providers for any HMOs, DMOs, or PPOs. However, if you have indemnity insurance, you can choose a doctor of your choice and we will help you file in order to maximize your coverage according to your plan allowances. Please see the information on Financial Policies for more details on how we can help you manage payment of your treatment.

What should I do if I have an emergency after the office is closed for the day?

If you have urgent concerns or any kind of emergency situation after hours, simply call our office. Our phone is answered 24 hours a day and one of our doctors will return your emergency call.

What should I do if my child has an accident and knocks out a tooth entirely?

In such cases, we advise parents to take the child immediately to Cook Children’s Hospital, and have them contact us after you’ve arrived. In the meantime, if at all possible, the parent should place the tooth back into its socket and hold it there until a medical/dental professional can evaluate the situation.

What precautions do you take to ensure patient safety?

We adhere to, and surpass all OSHA guidelines for cleanliness and safety in all of our procedures and materials handling. To this end, we have a state-of-the-art sterilization center, fresh water sources for each operatory, and a high level of training for every staff member. Your safety is our priority.

I’m a new patient and I know there will be forms to fill out before I undergo my procedure. Can I get copies of those forms ahead of time to fill out at home?

For your convenience, you can complete all the necessary forms prior to your visit, by simply clicking here. These include a form for patient information and financial responsibility and a patient health history form. We adhere to HIPAA guidelines for protecting patient information. A copy of our privacy practices is also included here.

What is the typical recovery time after a wisdom tooth extraction?

We normally expect patients to fully recover from wisdom tooth extraction 3-5 days after surgery.

After my wisdom tooth extraction, how quickly can I return to my normal activities?

You can return to school/work on the third day following your wisdom tooth extraction, as long as you have not experienced any complications. In fact, you can even return to taking part in athletic activities within 7 days.

How long will my wisdom tooth extraction take?

The extraction process is quite fast, requiring as little as 15 to 25 minutes. However, your appointment will be somewhat longer to allow for sedation and awakening, making the entire procedure about 60 to 90 minutes long.

Are there any complications to watch for?

There are two relatively minor complications to watch for. First, some patients experience what’s known as ‘dry socket’ in the area of the extraction. Dry socket is characterized by a dull to moderate throbbing pain in the socket area, radiating toward the entire jaw, ear, and neck region. Advil or other over the counter analgesics will not relieve the pain. In such cases, we urge you to come in right away to our office for a no-charge visit, so that we can pack the socket with a special medication. This provides immediate pain relief and can be replaced by us daily until the symptoms are gone. Afterwards, you will also need to return one last time to have the pack removed.
In cases where we’ve removed a wisdom tooth that was impacted to a bone, it’s also possible to discover a minute bone fragment or “spicule” inside the gum tissue that causes irritation or abrasion inside the mouth. Although this is not a critical situation, we encourage you to call us and come in so that we can quickly remove it before it causes further discomfort.

How long will it take to have my dental implant placed?

Most patients are surprised to learn that the dental implant process only requires about 60 to 90 minutes. The entire appointment may be up to 2 1/2 hours, however, to allow time for the appropriate level of sedation before hand, and re-awakening afterward.

Can I have my extraction and implant placement done on the same visit?

Most patients are surprised to learn that the dental implant process only requires about 60 to 90 minutes. The entire appointment may be up to 2 1/2 hours, however, to allow time for the appropriate level of sedation before hand, and re-awakening afterward.

What will I be able to eat?

You may have soft foods, such as mashed potatoes, soft pasta, or scrambled eggs, then gradually progress to solid foods as comfort allows. A spoon should be used with thick milkshakes. No carbonated beverages or straws for 7 days.

I have been tramatized and spent fortune on root canals, caps etc over many years. I am now 72 and have receding gums, caps falling off etc. I think God for Dr. Scheidleman. He is brilliant and he CARES about his patients. He is patient and gentle. I feel confident and I am not scared. Five more to pull then implants. Thank you Dr. Scheidleman and God Bless. His office team also 😃👍 great.

Would love to rate much much higher than 5 stars! From the second I was welcomed, I felt like family. Dr.Runyon and his staff, were more than accommodating to my needs. Got me in immediately (less than 24 hours) for wisdom teeth extraction. Dr. Runyon even called me the night of, during his personal time to check up on me. I had no swelling- and even went to work the next day! Thank you all for all of your hard work. It doesn’t go unnoticed. ♥️

Dr. Scheideman and his staff were fantastic! I had a wisdom tooth infection and horrible pain and my dentist referred me to FWOS. They were able to fit me in for a consult within 2 hours of my dentist calling, which was amazing. Yesterday I had all 4 wisdom teeth extracted. The nurse/tech (I think her name was Jennifer) was super friendly and confirmed all my information and put me at ease to prep me for surgery. Dr. Scheideman checked on me before we started and was very comforting. He even numbed the spot on my arm where the IV was placed so I literally felt no pain for the entire procedure. I woke up a little dizzy and numb but pain free. I was sent home with thorough instructions, pain medication, and aftercare supplies. Dr. Scheideman even texted me to check in on me the next day. I am shocked how little pain and swelling I've had, and I feel surprisingly good! Obviously I hope to never have oral surgery again but if I did I would run to FWOS. 10 of 10. Would recommend!

I have the worst fear of doing anything with my teeth. Dr. k and his staff really knew how to make me feel comfortable and assured me that I was in the right hands. I had the best experience here and it definitely changed the way I dental treatment in the future. Thank you to the staff that were professional, punctual and so very kind. And a big thank you to Dr. K for taking such great care of me!! Highly recommend!!

I always have a hard time with dentists. I hate the tools and most of the time, I feel as if the staff is constantly judging me but the staff here is amazing! I came in today(they fit me in within 2 days) for wisdom tooth removal after an infection. My jaw had been shifted, couldn’t eat, constantly in pain but they put me to sleep, pulled the two teeth, and walked me out to my car. All done within 15 minutes. I’m in no pain at all and even got a checkup text from Dr. Scheideman. I still have two more wisdom teeth to be pulled so I will DEFINITELY be using them again!

Dr. Kostohryz and all his staff are great Highly recommend! You'll be in great hands!

Initial interactions were professional and thorough, I had two extractions for implants. My bone structure was good so no need for a bone graft. Dr. ScheidimenExplained the process in simplistic terms. The whole process took about 30-40 minutes. Shawna, my nurse patiently answered all of my questions and concerns. This was a very positive procedure. I am grateful to the team.
