Many residents have dental anxiety. Whether they had a bad experience as a child, or just find dental procedures painful, it’s understandable that patients are nervous about dental procedures. While routine procedures that can be performed by a general dentist, such as teeth cleanings and filling a cavity, don’t require sedation dentistry, the oral surgeries that are performed by our doctors may be significant enough for a patient to desire extra help to stay comfortable and relaxed during their procedure. That’s where our sedation dentistry options come into play.
What Sedation Dentistry Options Does Fort Worth Oral Surgery Offer?
Our doctors, who are highly trained in sedation dentistry, offer our oral surgery patients two types of anesthesia options:
- Local Anesthesia: This sedation option numbs the area of the mouth that is being worked on so that patients don’t feel any discomfort during their procedure. Patients will remain wide awake and alert if they choose local anesthesia. This option is also often combined with other sedation dentistry options for optimal comfort.
- IV Sedation Anesthesia: Only available by trained professionals like our doctors in our office, IV sedation puts oral surgery patients into a deep sleep during their procedure. They will be unaware of their oral surgery as it is taking place. Because of the strong medications used for this sedation dentistry option, our doctors may ask that you refrain from taking certain daily medications before your procedure, fast 6 hours before your surgery, and require you to arrange for a ride home after your surgery.
What Oral Surgeries Are Eligible for Sedation Dentistry?
Our doctors perform a variety of oral surgeries on patients. The following procedures may lead a patient to desire a sedation dentistry option:
- Wisdom teeth removal
- All-on-4® dental implants
- Dental implants
- Bone grafting
- Surgical extractions
- Impacted canines
- Sinus lift
- Oral pathology
- Alveoplasty
- Facial trauma surgery
- Jaw surgery
